Local resident Mary Francis Carter, 91, has been identified by investigators as the person killed in a three-vehicle crash involving a GMC pick-up truck hauling a trailer with mulch, a Toyota RAV4, and Honda Civic.
At approximately 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 26, deputies from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office were called to investigate an incident involving multiple drivers in the area of the Courthouse Road bypass and Old Battlefield Boulevard.
The preliminary investigation found that the truck, being driven by a 28-year-old man was towing the utility trailer when he struck the back of a the Toyota, which was being driven by a 61-year-old woman from Staunton.
After making contact, the pick-up pushed the RAV4 hundreds of feet down the road before continuing east on the parkway, over the center median, and hitting several trees before striking the Honda head-on, with Carter inside, and causing it to overturn.
The 91-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the crash, the driver of the Honda was taken to an area trauma center in critical condition; the driver of the RAV4 was treated at the hospital and released; and the driver of the pick-up was taken to a trauma center in Richmond and was listed in serious condition on Sunday afternoon.
Officials said that no charges have been placed and will be reviewed at the end of the investigation.
